We're close enough we could have gone. But, damn, it's hot. And there were 35,000 people surrounding the Old State Capitol. It didn't take long to decide we'd not be in the front row this time and instead would do what we'd planned.
But we did watch the Obama/Biden visit on television, with my mom. What a country!
All the same, a walk through our day yielded a praying mantis and a yellow spider, as well as a stop at a Fly-In.
It was not an ordinary day, in any way. No day is.
Hello Kate, I wouldn't exactly call myself an animal fanatic, although at present I have 2 dogs, 5 cats and a horse. I read your post about camping out in the backyard. I'm 52...we live "out in the sticks" on a farm. I love to sleep outside on my screened porch. One year, I slept out there all summer and as it crept into fall,I hated to give it up...I just kept piling on extra blankets until finally one morning (with a near frozen head), I decided it was time to move inside!
This falls under, did you know... Sexual cannibalism is common among praying mantises. The female may start feeding by biting off the male’s head and if mating had begun, the male’s movements may become even more vigorous in its delivery of sperm.(evidently, he figures time is of the essence) Now there is something to be thankful for if you are a male member of the species homo sapiens. Interesting? If so, here's more...
Larger species have been known to prey on small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes.
Just when you thought it was safe to go outside in the backyard. do-do-do-do.

Of the two comments for this post I am much more comfortable with Janet's view of the outdoors than Ralph's.
Perhaps he should seek professional help?
